PQ'S NEWEST DIVE SITE
PQ is happy to announce yet another addition to our many dive sites. On Aug 20, 2010 the Friday Night Dive Group sank this 30 ft. Scarab. It is sunk to the right of Mike's Rock in Speedboat Lagoon. As you can see, Don Johnson and Miami Vice ran this one hard. Capt Jimmy Meads and Admiral Bob Rajner were in command, setting this artificial reef on the Portage Quarry floor.
International Legends of Diving to Honor Ramon Nunez, Sr
Dr. Jose Jones, a Legend of Diving, will present the ILD Giant Stride Award to Ramon Nunez, Sr on December 3, 2011 to recognize Nunez's contributions to the world of diving. As the first native of Belize to be certified as a diver, Nunez also enjoyed the privilege of serving as guide to Jacques Cousteau and the crew of the Calypso during their famous trip to the Blue Hole.
You can read about Ramon's fascinating life story on our sister site, www.internationallegendsofdiving.com. If you'd like to join us in Belize to help honor Ramon, please call ILD's Event Coordinator, Monica Lynn, at 419-494-6218 or email her at monica@legendsofdiving.com.
Christopher Guglielmo Featured in PQ's Dive Log
The work of Christopher Guglielmo, world-renowned underwater photographer, will now be featured in the Portage Quarry Dive Log section of our website. As many of you know, Christopher visited PQ in 2009 to teach an Underwater Photography Workshop and featured us on his website, www.aquaexposure.com. Guglielmo's photography has been recognized internationally as exemplified by these recent awards: 1st Place 2010 Cairns Underwater Photo Competition; 2009 Photographer of the Year by South Florida Underwater Photographic Society; 2009 Wildlife Photographer of the Year; 1st Place 2009 Scuba Diving Magazine Underwater Photo Competition. He is currently working as Captain of the Star Dancer in Papua New Guinea, preparing to publish two coffee table books of his work, as well as planning to open his own gallery in Florida upon his return to the States later this year. Though he can't make it to the quarry this year due to previous commitments, Guglielmo has expressed interest in returning to PQ in the future.
